Understanding the pH Calculator

The pH scale is one of the most widely used measurements in chemistry, biology, agriculture and environmental science. It tells you how acidic or basic a water-based solution is, on a scale that typically runs from 0 to 14. Anything below 7 is considered acidic, exactly 7 is neutral (the value of pure water at 25°C), and anything above 7 is basic, also called alkaline. Our pH calculator lets you move between the different ways chemists express acidity — hydrogen ion concentration, hydroxide ion concentration, and dissociation constants for weak acids and bases — without needing to do the logarithmic math by hand.

What Is pH and Why It Matters

pH stands for "potential of hydrogen," and it is defined mathematically as the negative base-10 logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution, written as pH = -log₁₀[H⁺]. Because the formula uses a logarithmic scale, each whole-number change in pH represents a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration. That means a solution with a pH of 3 is ten times more acidic than one with a pH of 4, and a hundred times more acidic than one with a pH of 5. This is why even small pH shifts can have a large practical impact, whether you are testing soil for a garden, monitoring an aquarium, checking pool water, or running a titration in a lab.

How to Use This pH Calculator

Start by picking the type of input you have. If you already know the hydrogen ion concentration, choose the "From [H⁺]" mode and enter your value along with the correct unit — mol/L, mmol/L or µmol/L. If you instead know the hydroxide ion concentration, switch to "From [OH⁻]" mode, and the tool will use the water dissociation relationship (pH + pOH = 14 at 25°C) to work out the pH for you. For weak acids and bases that do not fully ionize in water, use the Ka or Kb modes: enter the initial concentration of the acid or base along with its dissociation constant, and the calculator applies the appropriate equilibrium approximation to estimate the hydrogen or hydroxide ion concentration before converting it to pH. Once your values are entered, press Calculate pH. pH is calculated using the formula pH = -log10[H+], where [H+] is the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution. For example, a solution with [H+] = 1 × 10⁻⁴ M has a pH of 4.

pH measures hydrogen ion concentration while pOH measures hydroxide ion concentration. At 25°C they always add up to 14, so pOH = 14 - pH. A low pH means an acidic solution, and a high pOH means the opposite — a low hydroxide concentration.
