Wavelength Calculator: Formula, Examples
Wavelength is one of the most fundamental properties of any wave — be it a radio signal crossing continents, a ray of light illuminating the visible world, or a sound wave vibrating the air around us. Defined as the spatial distance between two consecutive points of the same phase in a wave cycle, wavelength determines how waves interact with matter, how they propagate through different media, and how we perceive them. Our free online wavelength calculator provides instant, accurate results for students, engineers, physicists, and hobbyists alike.
What Is Wavelength?
Wavelength (λ, lambda) is the distance between successive crests or troughs of a wave. It is measured in metres (SI unit), though nanometres (nm) are common for light and kilometres (km) for radio waves. Wavelength and frequency are inversely related: as frequency increases, wavelength decreases proportionally for a given wave speed.
The Wavelength Formula
Frequency: f = v / λ
Wave Speed: v = f × λ
Speed of Light: c = 299,792,458 m/s (vacuum)
In these equations, λ is wavelength in metres, v is the wave propagation speed in metres per second, and f is frequency in Hertz (cycles per second). For electromagnetic (EM) waves in a vacuum, the speed is always c regardless of frequency — this is why different colours of light have different wavelengths rather than different speeds.

How to Use This Bulk Wavelength Calculator
For a single calculation, choose what you want to solve for using the tabs: Wavelength (λ), Frequency (f), or Wave Speed (v). Select the wave medium from the preset dropdown — EM waves in vacuum, sound in air, water, or steel — or enter a custom speed. Type your known value (scientific notation like 3e8 is supported) and click Calculate Wave. The result appears immediately with your selected unit and decimal precision.
For bulk analysis, select the solve mode, prepare a plain text or CSV file with one value (or comma-separated pair for speed mode) per line, and upload via drag-and-drop or paste into the text area. All entries are processed instantly with a results table, summary statistics, and a CSV download option.
