Why XML tools still matter for developers and SEOs
XML has been quietly holding the web together for more than two decades, and it isn't going anywhere. Sitemaps, RSS feeds, product data feeds, configuration files, and countless enterprise systems still rely on this markup language because it is strict, self-describing, and easy to validate against a schema. The catch is that XML documents grow messy fast — a single misplaced closing tag can break an entire feed, and a poorly formatted sitemap can quietly stop search engines from crawling new pages. That is exactly the gap a good set of XML tools is meant to fill.
Take formatting as the simplest example. A raw XML export from a database or an API often lands as one long, unreadable line. Running it through an XML formatter instantly restores proper indentation, so nested elements, attributes, and closing tags line up the way a human eye expects. A sitemap with fifty thousand URLs needs to be split into multiple smaller files to stay within search engine limits, while several smaller XML exports from different systems often need to be merged into one before further processing. Compression trims unnecessary whitespace so files transfer faster and take up less storage, which matters for any pipeline moving large volumes of data on a schedule.
None of these tasks require installing software or learning a new programming library.
